The latest in radiation treatment for cancer a proton therapy system will be launched in Hong Kong by 2020 as an alternative for patients, especially children. Proton therapy has been proven to be particularly effective against certain type of cancers. The private HKSH will set up the Hitachi proton therapy equipment at the future HKSH Eastern District Advanced Medical Centre in Shau Kei Wan. Following the granting of rezoning approval by the Town Planning Board in 2015, the Hospital’s plan to build the advanced medical centre has progressed significantly in April 2016 when the Hospital signed an agreement with Hitachi to bring in Hong Kong’s first proton therapy, with patient treatment targeted to commence in 2022. The construction of the Centre has formally commenced in mid-2017. Caltite System has been specified by the consultant for permanently Dry! Integral waterproofing and corrosion-proofing in the reinforced concrete for the basement structure, including part of the basement structure specially built in concrete of specially high density for protection against proton radiation.
