Aktins propose to use hydraulic jack insert tunnel method for the tunnel section crossing over the existing Airport Express Link (AEL). The alternative design combines dual 3-lane tunnel of approximately 1km in length. The structure is supported on two rows of bored piles along each side of the tunnel. Atkins design permits the tunnel installation to be carried out in one phase and substantially reduces the impact on the operation of the Airport Express and the link-road to the Hong Kong Airport. Since the precast tunnel section will be jacked into the soil layer, and the precast tunnel block will be subjected to a wearing off for up to 50mm thick of the structural concrete which is calculated by Intrafor Hong Kong Ltd, therefore, the installation of the external tanking system cannot be possible on the precast tunnel section. After consulting Atkins China Ltd and Cementaid (HK) Ltd, the Caltite Waterproofing System is proposed to be used for the waterproofing system for this precast tunnel block tunnel passing through Airport Express Link
